Coach Stephens is a graduate of Pulaski County High School where he earned All-State Honors at both Running Back and Defensive Back. An initial walk-on at Western Kentucky University, Clay was a 3-year letterman earning Special Teams MVP as a junior and a senior, Team Captain as a senior member of the first FBS football season for WKU, and earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Physical Education and Health Education. He also has earned a Master's of Education Degree in K-12 Administration as well as a Rank I in Supervisor of Instruction, both from The University of the Cumberlands.
Clay is entering his 17th season teaching and coaching at the high school level and his sixth at Bowling Green. He has had previous stops as a Strength and Conditioning Coordinator as well as Special Teams Coordinator at Logan County, Butler County, Barren County and Warren Central where he also took over Defensive Coordinator responsibilities. Coach Stephens has also had head coaching stints at both Warren Central and Adair County while also overseeing their strength and conditioning programs. He is moving from the Dean of Students role at BGHS to an Assistant Principal position this school year. He will continue to be responsible for coaching the safeties as well as the Special Teams Coordinator for the Purples.
Coach Stephens has been married to his wife, Amber, for 21 years. Amber is a Practice Manager for Med Center Health. They have two children, Carlie and Cash.
